Medicines Management

Medicines are the most common healthcare intervention and they account for 15-20% of Northamptonshire Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) expenditure. The CCG Prescribing and Medicines Management Team (P&MMT) is responsible for making best use of available resources to improve the health of individuals and the population as a whole. This is achieved by providing prescribing advise to healthcare professionals following review of clinical records or audit and by the production of guidance. The team comprises of Pharmacists, Pharmacy technicians,  Dietitians and a Continence Nurse who work principally in GP practices and Care Homes.

Changes to supply of medicines for minor health conditions

The Northamptonshire CCG is supporting the implementation of NHS England’s recommendation that “over the counter” (OTC) medicines e.g. hay fever treatments, should not be routinely prescribed by GP practices for a number of common conditions. It is anticipated that the promotion of “self-care” for these minor conditions will reduce the CCGs’ expenditure on OTC items as well as “freeing up” appointments at GP practices for patients with significant health care issues. Patients have been made aware that OTC items for minor conditions will no longer be routinely prescribed via posters, texts and reception room videos. Support materials for patients, including condition specific information leaflets, have been made available within the “self-care” section on the website (here).
