Gluten Free products on prescription

Following an engagement process carried out by NHS England and Improvement (NHSE&I)we have taken the decision not to continue the supply of gluten free products on prescription.

NHSE&I requested that NHS Northamptonshire CCG consider the provision of gluten free food supply for the local population of Northamptonshire from 1 October 2021. This matter was duly considered at the Primary Care Commissioning Committee public meeting on the 7 September 2021, and it was decided that NHS Northamptonshire CCG would not commission gluten free products for patients diagnosed with coeliac disease.

The Gluten Free Food Supply was originally commissioned when access to gluten free foods was not readily available to purchase from supermarkets or online.  Most other CCGs have already stopped providing these products so Northamptonshire was unusual in that patients with coeliac disease could obtain Gluten Free products on the NHS. It is understood, that Northamptonshire was unusual in that patients with coeliac disease could still obtain Gluten Free products on the NHS as most other CCGs have already stopped providing these products.

Further information is available on the NHS Choices website www.nhs.uk/conditions/coeliac-disease . The Coeliac UK website https://www.coeliac.org.uk/home/ also contains lots of useful information including Gluten Free food safety and a Gluten Free diet on a budget.

The funding saved will be re-invested into the local NHS.
